Topic : How does stratospheric sulfate geoengineering affect food supply in China?

Speaker : Lili Xia

Host : Prof.John Moore

Abstract :

NASA GISS general circulation model was used to simulate stratospheric sulfate geoengineering scenario and DSSAT crop model to estimate its impact on food supply in China. Without changes of agricultural technology, stratospheric geoengineering reduces the yields of middle season rice and maize in Jiangsu and Shandong, respectively. However, fertilizer increases crop yields significantly. Decline of crop yields due to geoengineering could be compensated by increasing fertilizer ~10%. Therefore, according to all our assumptions and limited simulations, stratospheric sulfate geoengineering would not influence yields of middle season rice and maize in China significantly.
