主 题:Regionally refined climate simulations using the E3SM atmosphere model 时 间:2017年11月13日(星期一) 14:00-16:00 地 点:京师科技大厦B座318(学院南路12号) 主讲人:汤琦
讲座内容介绍: A key goal of the Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM) project is to develop a high resolution, fully coupled Earth system model for the climate simulation and prediction. However, the globally uniform high-resolution model is computationally intensive. The regionally refined model (RRM) is developed as an economical tool for high resolution model development and studies. The V1 CONUS RRM is about 8 times more efficient than its equivalent uniform high-resolution model. In this study, we evaluate how well the RRM mimics the uniform high-resolution model behaviors over the fine portion of the grids (e.g., the CONUS) by comparing the low- and high resolution and RRM models with the observations. Besides the basic, important dynamical and physical variables, our analysis focuses on longstanding climate model biases that may be improved by increasing the resolution, such as convection diurnal cycle, precipitation intensity distribution, precipitation extremes, and land-atmosphere coupling. The V1 CONUS RRM can generally reproduce the high-resolution model results, such as the biases in upper-level winds, too much light precipitation and too little heavy precipitation. The findings in this study will be likely to establish foundations for applying the RRM tool for high-resolution model development in the E3SM.
