Topic 1 : Satellite Observations of Water Storage Changes in China Using GRACE

Speaker : James S. Famiglietti , Professor

Earth System Science , School of Physical Sciences
University of California, Irvine

Host : Prof. Qingyun Duan

Abstract: NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) mission has provided nearly a decade of new information on terrestrial water storage changes, allowing for studies of water cycle change and for water budget closure at large spatial (>100,000 km2) and temporal (> one month) scales. This has enabled tracking of natural and anthropogenic trends in freshwater availability, and for new, large-scale estimates of freshwater discharge, evapotranspiration, and groundwater or snow water storage changes. In this presentation, GRACE-based estimates of water storage changes in the North China Plain aquifer, the Three Gorges Reservoir, and the Tibetan Plateau region will be described. The GRACE data provide new insights into the behavior of terrestrial water storage, and may be of value in regional water management and related policy decisions.

Time: 10:00-11:30 AM, 30 May, 2011

Venue: C306,Sci&Tech Building

Topic2: Summer Rainfall Anomalies over the SE US

Speaker: Dr. Wenhong Li

Assistant professor of Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at Duke University

Research Interest: Dr. Lis research interests focus primarily on the climate and terrestrial ecosystem interaction, hydrometeorology, climate and modeling. Her current research is to understand how the hydrological cycle changes in the current and future climate and their impacts on the ecosystems, and future climate over tropical lands and the continental US.

Host: Prof.Kaicun Wang

Time: 14:00-15:30 PM, 30 May, 2011

Venue: GCESS Simulation Hall,1st floor,Sci&Tech Building
