Abstract:The coupling of land surface models and distributed hydrological models potentially improves the land surface representation, benefiting both the streamflow prediction capabilities of the hydrological models as well as providing improved estimates of water and energy fluxes into the atmosphere. Through coupling a biosphere scheme (SiB2) with a geomorphology-based hydrological model (GBHM), the water and energy budget based distributed hydrological model (WEBDHM) has been developed. The model enables consistent descriptions of water, energy and CO2 fluxes at a basin scale, while it has high efficiency for simulations of large river basins while incorporating subgrid topography. After careful evaluations at river basins of USA and Japan, the WEB-DHM is applied to different river basins with various climate characteristics for improved water resources management.
