Host : Prof. John Moore

Abstract :

Our understanding of the cause of the 20th century sea level rise has changed considerably over the past decade. Observational evidence is becoming convincing that global sea level has indeed been rising over the past few hundred years and 20th century sea level rise was 17-20cm. Sea level rise is a combination of ocean volume change associated with thermosteric expansion of the ocean and change in the mass of the ocean due to melting of continental ice and filling of continental reservoirs. The projections of future sea level rise rely critically on the balance of these components, and the methods for estimating sea level rise under changing climate are critically discussed.
